I am excited to announce that Simply Marina has become self-hosted. In my second year of blogging and after months of hesitation, I finally decided to take the next step. Because I had two options – either go self-hosted or give up. I was really close to the latter. I was actually on the verge of deleting all my social media accounts, my WordPress.com account, and last but not least my entire blog.
Just then a sudden inspiration struck. And I remembered why I didn’t want to say goodbye. I’m not done with blogging yet. I feel I’ve got more to say, more to share. Despite the unpleasant obsession with Twitter and other social networks, and even though it’s all too overwhelming at times… I believe it’s worth the efforts, not in terms of earning money. It’s worth it for so many other reasons as well.
So… Welcome to my new old blog. It looks pretty much as before. My first intention was to make it look completely different. Well, one step at a time. I was more concerned with migrating the whole thing properly than choosing a new theme.
Now, the transfer from WordPress.com to my new host, Bluehost, is complete and I am so happy no big issues turned up during the migration. I will probably share more about my experience soon, as I believe it may help other newbies like myself. All I will say in this post is that I couldn’t have done it without the Bluehost team. A huge Thank you, guys!
I contacted Bluehost several times in the last couple of weeks, bombarding them with (stupid) questions and every time, they were more than helpful. I love the 24/7 support. Who would answer the ignorant questions of a mummy blogger at 7 am on a Sunday morning? Bluehost would.
So far, I am super satisfied with Bluehost and would definitely recommend it. Excellent service, good prices. As a new customer, you will also benefit from big discounts of 50 % or even more. I have published a quick guide going over how to start a blog with Bluehost but there are a few more steps if you are to transfer an existing domain, etc. That’s why a new post on the subject is coming up soon.
Yes, moving your blog to WordPress.org can get tricky if this is your first time and you are not a tech-savvy person (I am not, obviously). Yes, I had to google many things, read dozens of articles and tutorials while being almost sure I would mess it up. But after all, it is not that scary. And I know it was the right decision for me.
Back to Simply Marina now. The same appearance for the time being, but there will be some new things and hopefully, more content to share with you.
Sweet Home is a new category on the blog. I thought it was a good idea to include it since I spend plenty of time at home myself. As a matter of fact, I love the comfort of my home and I don’t mind being in most of the day, as long as I have a cuppa (green tea is my new addiction), a good read, my laptop and hmm, a set of dumbbells at hand. Utopian enough, though. A mum’s everyday reality is slightly different. And no, being a home bird doesn’t mean I don’t love travelling. 😉
I also hope to be sharing more useful pieces in A Woman’s World and maybe, become more consistent with the A Woman’s World series.
I believe it’s time to develop the Family category, too. More of our family life or more things parenting and travel. We are an expat family which means a certain amount of variables, so we will see how it goes.
I considered (only once) the possibility of taking Books off but no, I can’t do this. Simply Marina is a reflection of its creator and I am a desperate bookworm. I just can’t give up on this category. My only hope is that I will have more time to write book reviews in the future. Recently, they haven’t been a priority and this is a shame.
Finally, I will keep being open to contributions on the blog if such come up. Simply Marina prides itself on welcoming guest posts and any quality content relevant to its subject matter.
That’s all, folks. For now. Speak to you soon and thank you so much for reading.
