The Island of Thassos: Love at First Sight

Our family holiday is over. I told you we were going to Greece. We wanted a quiet, beautiful place. We got it. Actually, our expectations were totally beaten. My husband and I have visited Greece many times before and we know it is an enchanting country. But this year, we rediscovered it in a different way. On Thassos…

Thassos Island View

It felt like the perfect summer holiday. Because the island of Thassos turned out to be the perfect summer destination for us. I took a nice digital break just the way I intended, and instead of spending hours with either my phone or my laptop, I had fun with my family. We all had fun. Together.

I am sure many of you have been on Thassos – a gorgeous combination of sea and mountain. Still, I hope you don’t mind my sharing about our one-week stay.

The island offers something for everyone. Most importantly, it has the unique spirit of Greece – romantic views, narrow lanes, idyllic little restaurants, the irresistibly delicious cuisine, the soothing sound of Greek music, and the kindness of the local people.

I’ve always been in love with Greece and everything Greek. I guess, this is because it borders my country and its culture has influenced ours quite a lot. We Bulgarians are so close to the culture of Greece, we feel it, we are fascinated by it. To a great extent, we long for living the way our southern neighbours live. Because they fully enjoy life. Who wouldn’t be in love with that? 🙂

We stayed at a lovely beach hotel, Hotel Villa Nisteri. Beautiful place, sheltered between a pine forest and the sea, just a few minutes away from the main town, Limenas, and the ferry port. Extremely friendly staff, peaceful atmosphere, small non-crowded beach, oh! and excellent food. I loved their Greek moussaka. If you want to enjoy some tranquillity and escape the hustle and bustle, this is the right place for you.

I am in paradise…

On the second day, we found this amazing pastry store and I literally wanted to spend the rest of my holiday there. 🙂 Two charming Bulgarian ladies work at the store, and their colleague was more than helpful, too. Allotinó offers a huge variety of sweets and treats, and my favourite Greek cookies. I am definitely in paradise. 🙂

Traditional cookies (they are so buttery!), syrupy sweets, kourabiedes, and Greek fig jam.

Monastery of Archangel Michael

The nice ladies from Αλλοτινό recommended this monastery and we couldn’t miss it. The Monastery of Archangel Michael is unique and it’s really worth seeing. Although it’s full of tourists, you can feel the spirit and tranquillity at every corner of this holy place. Built on a cliff, it also offers breathtaking views of the Aegean sea.

One week has slipped away. Bye bye, Thassos. We wish we could stay a bit longer. Thank you for the dream holiday and see you next summer. My family and I fell in love with you…

Falling in love with Greece is easy. You just need to go there.

And Thassos… It was love at first sight. 🙂
